Abstract

Increasing competition in the digital age forces companies to find ways to rapidly adapt to digital and technological changes. Industry 4.0 technologies connect smart objects and equipment in production systems. These smart systems make it possible to collect data in real time, use it instantly and make decisions accordingly. The increase in production volume with these developing technologies and global warming have revealed the responsibility issue in terms of natural resources. For this reason, the concept of sustainability has emerged in addition to technology, and the aimed is to make business processes sustainable. Business enterprises have to consider sustainability in their business functions. This reveals the necessity of evaluating all processes in terms of economic, environmental and social aspects. One of the processes related to business enterprises is material requirements planning and enterprise resource planning. In this chapter, smart and sustainable material requirements planning systems and enterprise resource planning systems are discussed, and a smart and sustainable MRP framework is proposed. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Turan Paksoy and Muhammet Deveci; individual chapters, the contributors.
